It shouldn’t surprise you that about 1/3 of American children are considered overweight. With such busy lives it’s too easy to frequent the fast food drive-thru. But in order to keep your children healthy follow these easy tips and stay away from that oh-so-tempting fast food.

Because children are still growing it’s important not to significantly reduce their caloric intake. Their bodies need calories in order to develop properly. When helping your kids eat healthy it’s more important to focus on what foods they are eating rather than how much; they need to eat until they feel satisfied.

Not all fat is bad; but Trans fat are those that should definitely be avoided. If you regularly give your children food with high trans fats, cut that out of his/her diet and replace it with a healthy counterpart.

When serving breads and pastas, offer whole wheat for a healthier approach. If kids don’t like the taste at first, add another flavor to it and they’ll get used to the new bread soon enough. Peanut butter and jelly or low fat lunchmeat with light mayonnaise will help mask the flavor until their taste buds adjust. When you add spaghetti sauce or any other sauce to the pasta the kids will not even notice a difference.

Canned salmon is very good for your kids and makes for a healthy sandwich alternative; and if your kids like tuna, chances are they’ll like this too.

Fruits and veggies should be given to your children often. And don’t be afraid to vary the types of fruits that they eat. Be creative and let the kids enjoy these natural treats. Don’t forget about smoothies; they’re easy to make and most kids will suck them down.

Vegetables can be topped with cheese, served cooked, or raw for a variety of tastes for your little ones. If you have kids that refuse to eat veggies, here’s a sneaky trick. Grate some veggies up really small and add them to a dish. If the flavor of the dish is strong enough, the kids will never know the difference (but their body will).

Dairy products, of course, are good for your children. But they can be full of fat, so offer your kids low-fat yogurt and low-fat milk. (Kids love to put crunchy granola on top of yogurt, it tastes good and it changes the texture). Switching your kids to low-fat dairy will allow them to get the benefits from dairy while eliminating the bad fats at the same time.Â

Every parent knows that kids like to snack. Many parents try to completely cut out snacking from their child’s diet. This usually ends with the parents and kids both being frustrated and tired from battle. It’s a more realistic approach to replace unhealthy snacks with healthy ones instead of eliminating snacking altogether.

Chips are a popular snack with children. The next time you go to the grocery store pick up a bag of baked chips instead of the traditional kind. Pretzels and rice cakes are also a great alternative.

Muffins and cookies are another snack that kids love to eat; remember to serve them sparingly. Also, if you make these snacks at home instead of buying them at the store, you can add healthy ingredients like fruit, oats, or nuts. They make a great addition to most baked goods.

Because food is an important part of life it’s essential to establish good eating habits while your kids are young. (If you’re starting late, that’s okay. It’s never too late to change eating habits). Eating is not just that; it’s a way of life. Get into the habit of planning ahead and making healthier choices for your kids; what you teach them now will follow them around for the rest of their lives.

The pH miracle diet is a new way to look at how you eat. By addressing each food, beverage, supplement, and additive by it’s acidic or alkaline signature a balance can be negotiated. Our bodies work according to the pH scale, which works on a range of 1 to 14. A ranking of 1 on this scale denotes a high level of acid while a ranking of 14 indicates that there is a high concentration of alkaline present.

A ranking of 7 on the pH scale represents neutrality in pH. The blood in the human bloodstream regulates at the level of 7.35, which is mildly alkaline. The pH miracle diet advocates keeping the intake of food into your body in line with this optimum level. The method of implementation is quite simple, by coordinating an eating planned structured around a comprehensive list of foods, and supplements you can create an effective strategy to lower acidity in your body.

Alkaline intake will counter act this stored acidity by being metabolized and neutralizing them at the source. With balance as the benchmark for a workable health plan; constant monitoring of the body’s pH levels is essential. Saliva pH test strips with a base range of 4.5 to 8.5 will allow for accurate readings that can assist you in making the proper adjustments to your diet. Even with all of this knowledge and action there are outside influences that will affect your body’s acid production. These outside factors will greatly determine how you will implement the alkalizing foods and supplements. The most significant of these external factors will be stress.

Stress is ubiquitous, it is everywhere and it affects everyone. This universal problem has a very traumatic effect on your body. The body works overtime to combat stress that in turn creates more stress. This vicious cycle is propagated by an increase in acid production. As stated previously, acid is a detriment to your body. When the body is overly acidic it does not run well, on the cellular level, the body cannot maintain the immune system. The circulation is adversely affected with the heart having to compensate by working harder. With the heart beating at a higher rate to push this sticky blood through the bloodstream many of these sticky cell clumps break free from the path and attach themselves to the arterial walls creating further slowdowns in the circulation. Your body needs blood to function if the blood reaching the cells and organs are of poor quality this can have serious repercussions. Stress is an acid-producing killer.

There are many techniques in addition to diet that can help in your quest for a balanced pH level. Getting the adequate rest is always the best way to achieve stress relief, as well as meditation which can be two to three times more restful and rejuvenating than actual sleep. Limiting the intake of caffeine and other stimulants also works toward lowering stress in the body by removing these narcotics from the equation. At the heart of stress reduction is eating more foods that are alkaline in nature that will neutralize the acid waste in the body. Exercising is by far the most effective way to receive direct stress relief, and will also help reduce the fat stores of the body where acid waste inhabits in abundance.

It is normal to want to lose weight to look better or feel about yourself. Losing weight often requires a dietary adjustment, a daily work out regimen, or an entire change in your current lifestyle. These weigh loss necessities require dedication, enthusiasm and motivation. It is important to discover what inspires us to lose weight in order to maintain the level of motivation it takes to achieve results.

Many people who are just starting out on a diet may feel anxious, depressed or stressed out by the prospect of change. They may have made weight loss attempts before and failed, they may have been forced into a diet by their current health problems. In order for these people to overcome their negative feeling about starting a diet it is critical that they find personal motivation.

The first step is to identify your individual reason to lose weight. There is usually a compelling reason that triggers the desire to lose unwanted pounds. You mat no longer fit in your favorite pair of jeans, it may be difficult for you to play with your children, or maybe you just want to look good in a bathing suit for the summer.

Some experts suggest getting a stack of index cards. Then write down all benefits that you expect to achieve when you lose your weight. Then organize them in order of priority. This can act as a motivational tool because it requires that you think about each idea, compare it to others, and accept it in your mind. Putting things in black and white often help make them realistic.

You should keep your top five motivational index cards with you as often as possible. Put them in your desk at work, carry them in your purse, or keep a set in your car. When you feel like giving up on your diet just pull out the index cards so you can have a quick jolt of motivation.

Even if you feel good about your diet it is important to pull out your motivational index cards at least once a day, preferably when you wake up in the morning. The physical act of looking through the cards will help you remember what truly motivates you.

On days when you are feeling strong and confident about your weight loss attempt these written benefits might further inspire you. On days when you are not at your motivational peak the cards may help you avoid temptation by reminding you of your goals.

Another way to stay motivated to lose weight is to persuade a friend or partner to participate with you. Having someone close to you that is enduring the same diet may prove beneficial. You can talk to each other on days where temptations are especially strong and encourage each other to stay on track.

Joining a support group may also be helpful. Surrounding yourself with people in a similar situation can be motivational. You can feed off each other’s strengths and help get past weaknesses. Leaning on others has obvious benefits, but you may be surprised how much strength you can draw by being someone else’s support as well.

You will also find that once you begin to lose weight people will notice and begin to compliment your changing physique. Knowing that others are noticing your sacrifices may provide you with additional motivation to continue losing weight.

Attitude and motivation are critical in any successful attempt to lose weight. While it is important to understand the importance of losing weigh for health or physical reasons, it is just as important to identify the reasons you personally want to lose weight. You should use those reasons to keep yourself going.

The pH miracle diet is an exciting new way for people to take control of their health. By lowering your dependence on acid producing foods and raising your intake of alkali foods you can attain optimum health.

The pH scale is from 1 to 14 , 1 being very acidic and 14 being very alkaline. The blood in the human bloodstream tends to run slightly alkaline at 7.35. All foods, beverages and in fact everything we put into our bodies will breakdown into acid or alkali. The body will store and eliminate excess amounts of these things respectively. An excess amount of acid stored in the body will cause the blood to cluster in the bloodstream, causing fatigue and trauma to the body on the cellular level. When there is so much shutdown going on in the body, the immune system will be lowered allowing disease and illness to enter. By keeping the balance of the pH level in the body at 7.35 you can ensure good health. Eating more alkaline foods and avoiding overly acidic foods a proper balance can be maintained. Researching which foods are alkalizing and which ones are acidifying will give you the power to make informed choices. Knowing where you are on the pH scale will determine what changes you need to implement into your daily routine. The monitoring of this balance can be achieved through the regular use of pH saliva test strips. With so much riding on proper technique and form, the level of personal accountability can be rather high for the first time dieter, especially if they are used to other diets that don’t require as much responsibility as the pH diet. This can be a daunting task for many starting out on the pH miracle diet. Here are two common mistakes and their solutions.

Trying to add too much alkaline into the system is a common pitfall many overly enthusiastic dieters fall into. The purpose of the pH miracle diet is to create a permanent way of living for you stressing the idea of balance. Many dieters want to solve the problem with a quick fix submerging them into an all alkali intake. This is going overboard with supplements and beverages promising to raise their alkaline levels to unhealthy levels. As stated earlier about too much acid in your bloodstream being unhealthy for you, so too can an overabundance of alkali. Many people focus on the claim that cancer cannot survive in an alkaline environment, which is true, but nothing in the human body can survive very long in a purely alkali environment. Yes, it is true, too man alkalis can kill you. The key to life is everything in moderation and the pH diet is no exception. Acids and alkalis are meant to work in concert together. Acids serve your body and play a function in the breaking down of digested material. The stomach is an acid holding tank that converts food into energy. Alkaline waits in the intestinal tract for this newly energized material still hot with acidity and neutralizes it as the material is metabolized, absorbed and sent into the bloodstream. By keeping this harmonious partnership in synch you assure that your body’s pH levels stay within the optimum range.

Many people who start out don’t take enough time to look for complete listings of the pH levels of the foods they eat. There are many lists available online and in various books that offer food lists that break the groups down into acids and alkalis. Making sure to choose a comprehensive list will guarantee whole nutrition. A list that includes supplements, herbs, spices, and condiments is the most desirable. You want the most complete list possible including those foods which are neutral. Paying attention to how many foods are being ingested from the acid and alkali sides is a great way to ensure proper balance in the diet.

It is common to start a new exercise or diet program and see results right away. The pounds will start melting off and then all of a sudden the scale gets stuck and it seems impossible to lose anymore weight. This is called a weight loss plateau, and though the causes behind it are complex there are some simple ways to break through them.

To begin with, when trying to lose weight you should only weigh yourself once a week. This is because you may think you’ve hit a plateau when you are really only experiencing a normal fluctuation of weight. It is common for the human body to retain and expel water in cycles, so measuring yourself daily may be misrepresenting your actual weight loss progress.

It is also important to set reasonable expectations for yourself. People lose weight at different rates, so don’t be disappointed if the pounds don’t come off as fast as you had expected. In general the more weight you have to lose the quicker they will come off. I realistic expectation of weight loss is about one percent of your total body weight weekly.

Another way to break your weight loss plateau is too eat something bad. Though this may not seem logical it often works. Your body gets stuck in a routine and by adding something completely different to our diet your metabolism might be jumpstarted again.

It is also important to not skip meals or starve yourself. Limiting your food intake in this manner can trigger your body to go into starvation mode, which will actually slow down your metabolism. Eating less than 1000 calories a day means that you are denying your body of essential elements necessary for survival. Your body’s only defense is to slow down your metabolism in order to store energy in the form of fat. In order to jumpstart your metabolism, and break through your weight loss plateau you should eat 4 to 6 small meals a day.

Another tip for breaking your weight loss plateau is flushing out excess water. If your plateau is due to fluid retention you should limit your salt intake and drink plenty of water. Keeping your body hydrated with water has other benefits as well; it can give your metabolism a jumpstart. If the body is deprived of water the kidneys will begin to focus their attention on retaining water instead of burning fat. Experts agree that you should drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily.

Exercising can also push you past your plateau. When you are dieting or eating less your body’s natural response is to slow down your metabolism. You can stimulate it again by exercising. Experts recommend doing some sort of physical activity for at least 60 minutes a day.

If none of these helpful hints helps you break through your weight loss plateau you may want to try changing your diet for a few days. Experts recommend that your normal diet be made up of at least 50 percent carbohydrates. However, you may want to lower your carb intake and raise the amount of proteins in your diet for a few days to get off the plateau that you body has stalled out on.

Hitting a weight loss plateau can be frustrating and cause you to lose your motivation and give up. To avoid this it is important to understand that it is normal to hit a plateau despite your best efforts. You should stay dedicated and realize that you will break though your weight loss plateau eventually and continue to lose weight if you stick to your plan.

The pH miracle diet attempts to control many different conditions in the body, including obesity, through the omission of acidifying foods and behaviors. One of the most surprising inclusions on the list, at least to Westerners, is milk. Dairy products, although a mainstay of the Western diet, are not included in the diets of most of the populations around the world. So what does the rest of the world know that we don’t? Dairy is not necessary for health; from a pH perspective, it is actually harmful to the body.

Many people believe that dairy and milk are essential for bone density and for overall health. However, dairy products have large amounts of protein and fat, which are both acid forming elements. Cow’s milk and products made from cow’s milk produce acid. Goat and sheep milk and cheeses, which have less fat and protein, produce less acid. The only dairy exception is clarified butter that is alkalizing due to the short chain fats within it.

In 2003, the Harvard School of Public Health released an alternative pyramid to the FDA recommendations based on imbalances that the members saw in the original pyramid. Although it did not mention acid and alkaline foods specifically, the pyramid shows a tendency toward alkaline foods. One of the most striking differences between the FDA pyramid and the Harvard pyramid is the inclusion of a dairy serving or calcium supplement 1 time daily. The FDA recommends 2 to 3 servings per day, in addition to dietary supplements.

Dr. Meir Stampfer, a professor in the departments of Epidemiology and Nutrition and the Chair of the Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, points out in an explanation of the Harvard pyramid that Americans should be eating less dairy products. The body needs calcium, but not at the levels present in the two to three servings recommended by the FDA. Calcium is necessary for normal bone development and maintenance; yet the average adult can get enough calcium from a supplement. The levels of calcium present in 2 to 3 servings of dairy per day can actually be harmful to health. Excess calcium intake may increase the risk for certain cancers and there have been no links between massive amounts of calcium and osteoporosis prevention.

In addition, dairy is far from being a pure food. The dairy industry has worked hard to proliferate the image of cow’s milk being essential and harmless. Consider, however, that fifty years ago the average cow produces 2,000 pounds of milk per year and today cows average 50,000 pounds per year. Drugs, antibiotics, hormones, specialized breeding and forced feeding all up milk production so dairy farmers can produce in mass quantities. All of these additives are part of the milk that people drink everyday.

A growing number of Americans, including those who follow the pH miracle diet, are eliminating dairy from their diet and having fantastic results. In recent studies, milk has been linked to intestinal colic, intestinal irritation, anemia and allergic reactions in infants and children. In children, the main problems were allergy, ear and tonsil infection, asthma, colic and childhood diabetes. The studies showed that adults suffered from heart disease, arthritis, allergy and sinusitis as a result of conventionally produced milk.

Just a quick search on the dangers of dairy can really open your eyes about this “safe” food. Reading the research and seeing the acidic effects of milk and other dairy products make it clear why it is excluded on the pH miracle diet.

Dietitians have an important role in many peoples’ lives. A dietitian can help guide the daily diet as well as recommended a weight loss program for many individuals. Most people are unaware of how a dietitian can help them, and what they should expect when consulting a dietitian. Dietitians plan food and nutrition programs, and supervise the preparation and serving of meal. A professional dietitian can be used to help prevent and treat illnesses. Their job is to promote healthy eating habits and recommend dietary modifications, such as using less salt for patients with high blood pressure or reducing fat and sugar for overweight patients. Â

Dietitians have the job of managing food service system for hospitals, and schools. They often encourage healthy eating habits through education. There are several major areas of practice, which include clinical dietitians, community dietitians, management, and consultant dietetics. Most people will find consulting a clinical dietitian as the best solution to their dietary problems. A clinical dietitian has the job of providing nutritional services for patients in hospitals and nursing care facilities. Dietitians in this area, assess patients’ nutritional needs, develop and implement nutrition programs, and report the results of their programs. These professionals also confer with doctors and other health care professional to coordinate medical and nutritional needs of patients. Â

Overweight patients will also find it best to consult a clinical dietitian that specializes in the area of weight management. There are some clinical dietitians that specialize in the management of overweight patients, or in the care of renal and diabetic patients. Clinical dietitians also manage the service departments of nursing care facilities, small hospitals, and correctional facilities. Community dietitians are very different from clinical dietitians. Community dietitians have the job of counseling individuals and groups on nutritional practices that are designed to prevent disease and promote good health. These professionals work in public health clinics, home health agencies, and health maintenance organizations.   Â

Community dietitians also evaluate individuals’ needs, develop nutritional care plans, and instruct individuals and their families. The dietitians that work in the home health industry also provide instruction on grocery shopping and food preparation to the elderly, people with special needs, and children. Management dietitians are not readily involved with the public, and don’t usually work with individuals. They oversee large-scale meal planning and preparation in health care facilities, company cafeterias, prisons, and schools. The management dietitians must also hire, train, and direct other dietitians and food service workers, as well as provide the budget for and purchase food, equipment, supplies. Dietitians in this area also enforce sanitary and safety regulations, and prepare records and reports.   Â

A consultant dietitian is one who works under contract with health care facilities, or in their own private practice. Consultant dietitians perform nutrition screening for their clients and offer advice for weight loss and cholesterol reduction concerns. Some consultant dietitians also work for wellness programs, sports teams, supermarkets, and other nutrition-related businesses. These dietitians may also consult with food service managers in order to provide their expertise in sanitation, safety procedures, menu development, budgeting, and planning. Dietitians can help individuals and families learn new patterns of eating and become healthier.

The doctor can help in the understanding of daily eating plans that are best for their patients, and can give patients written material that will help them establish new habits. Most people are able to receive referrals for dietitians from their General Practitioner. Patients at hospitals may also find it best to consult a staff dietitian, who will help patients with heart-healthy eating habits.

Don’t be fooled by the name ‘high protein’—high protein is another way of saying low or no-carb diet. All of the fad diets that were no or low carb in recent years were bashed for their unhealthiness. Don’t be tricked into thinking that this new thing—the high protein diet—is a whole new thing! Low or no carb diet also means high protein or fat diet; it’s just changing the name and hoping everyone will buy it!Â

What exactly is a high protein diet? Well, a high protein diet is exactly what it says it is; but the important distinction to make is that in order to be high protein it also has to limit the amount of carbs that you put into your body. If you keep the amount of carbs the same as it currently is, but up the amount of protein, you will not lose any weight; however, if you take out some of the carb calories and replace them with calories from protein, you will, most likely lose weight. How it works is a whole different question though, and the bottom line is that it is not very healthy.

First of all, the body does, indeed, need protein in order to be healthy. The body uses protein to build and to maintain muscle mass, which is absolutely essential to the health of the body. What most people don’t know is that there are a lot of foods that provide protein; meat is not the only source of protein. Other common sources of protein in an average diet include all dairy products from milk to cheese and everything in between, all types of nuts, and several types of beans. What this means is that even vegetarians, if they know how to design a proper diet, can get more than adequate daily protein intake from milk, yogurt and cheese even if they do not eat meat, fish or eggs. The abundance of soy products today makes this possible even for vegans.

So the body does, indeed, need protein. On the other hand, the body definitely needs carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are what the body runs on, the energy source of the body, if you will. While protein builds and maintains muscles, carbohydrates give the body the energy to move those muscles so that they can be built and strengthened. If you cut carbs out of your diet, it’s like asking your car to run on water instead of gas; you’ve taken away the body’s energy source.Â

Protein can be converted into energy, but the process of doing so is inefficient and produces toxins while it’s converting protein to glucose. The result is becoming overtired, cranky and constipated. Of course, low and no carb diets make you lose weight, just like the high protein diet will make you lose weight (assuming that not all of the proteins you choose to consume are rib eye steaks and filet mignons wrapped in bacon) but there’s a reason why the food pyramid exists. The ideal human diet is varied, including foods from all groups. Each group has its purpose, except refined sugars. If you’re looking to lose weight in a healthy, effective way, the answer is to choose the right carbs (complex), the right meats (leaner), the right fats, (unsaturated, not trans) and to eat a lot of fruits and vegetables.

This may not be the quickest way to lose weight, but it’s the healthiest and it’s the most permanent type of weight loss. High protein or no carb diets help you lose a lot of weight all at once, but it all comes piling back on as soon as you go back to your ‘regular’ diet.
